The story
Diyarbakir-based football club Amedspor has advanced to the upper tier of the Turkish Super Lig, positioning itself near the top of the standings after ten matches in its debut season in the top flight. The team is scheduled to play league leaders Galatasaray in an upcoming fixture.
A decade prior, the club faced significant operational hurdles while competing in the third tier. During a period of conflict in southeast Turkiye between state military forces and the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), Amedspor encountered financial penalties, stadium bans for away supporters, and police raids. Rival fans also targeted club players and officials.
Established originally as Melikahmet Turanspor in 1972, the organisation underwent multiple name changes before municipal authorities in Diyarbakir assumed control in 1990. In 2014, the club adopted the name Amedspor—incorporating 'Amed', the Kurdish designation for the city—alongside green and red club colours.
A closer look
Academic Vahap Coskun stated that the club's current performance stems from several elements, including coach Besnik Hasi, a new player roster featuring Nigerian striker Gift Orban, and sellout home crowds exceeding 30,000 attendees. Coskun also pointed to a changing political environment as a factor influencing match conditions.
Reha Ruhavioglu, director of the Kurdish Studies Center, noted that the team's matches function as an indicator of broader social and state integration regarding regional identity, culture, and language within national sports.
