The story

A 16-year-old boy and an 80-year-old man have been killed in a light aircraft crash near Loch Lomond in Scotland, according to Police Scotland.

The incident occurred north-east of the village of Drymen, Stirling, at about 4.45pm on Friday, with emergency services responding to reports of the incident.

The Piper Tomahawk II aircraft took off from Glasgow airport on Friday afternoon at 4.17pm, according to data from online flight-tracking tools.

A closer look

The plane circled before coming down north of Drymen, with the tracking data showing the plane stopped transmitting at 4.37pm.

Earlier in the day, the plane had taken off from Cumbernauld airport at 11.46am, before flying to Glasgow airport, staying there until about 1pm, and then embarking on a flight north-east to Newport-on-Tay, opposite Dundee, before turning round and heading back to Glasgow.

The plane was on the ground at the airport for just over an hour before it took off again and began its final flight.

The wider picture

Police Scotland said its Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) had been informed, and inquiries were taking place to establish the full circumstances of the incident.
