The brief

United States President Donald Trump has called off his scheduled weekend in-person campaign events in Iowa and Kansas, pivoting instead to a series of telephone rallies organised by the Republican National Committee ahead of the midterm elections.

The story

United States President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he has cancelled his upcoming weekend campaign rallies in Kansas and Iowa, opting instead to reach voters through telephone broadcasts. The decision alters his planned midterm blitz, which was originally intended to feature appearances across 35 locations nationwide to boost turnout for Republican candidates.

The Republican National Committee confirmed the cancellations in a statement, announcing a schedule of virtual events across nearly 20 states in the closing days before the November 3 midterm elections. RNC Chairman Joe Gruters stated that the tele-rallies would maximise opportunities for the president to connect with a larger number of voters efficiently. According to White House officials, the administration aims to hold more than 20 tele-rallies by Election Day, with broadcasts planned for battleground regions including Michigan, Alaska, Texas, and Iowa.

Trump stated that he felt confident about the standing of Republican candidates, remarking that he did not believe he needed to travel to Kansas because Senator Roger Marshall was performing well in a competitive race against Democratic challenger Adam Hamilton. In Iowa, where nearly all congressional races are contested, local Republican operatives noted that while an in-person visit would have been welcome, the virtual alternatives would still provide support for voter turnout. Trump's scheduled appearance on Friday in Daytona Beach, Florida, remains on schedule to proceed.

A closer look

The midterm elections will determine the control of Congress, with all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and approximately one-third of the Senate seats on the ballot. Republicans currently hold narrow majorities in both legislative chambers. Political analysts have pointed to factors such as foreign policy concerns, cost-of-living issues, and polling figures as elements shaping the current electoral environment.

Addressing reporters on Thursday, Trump disputed suggestions that the event cancellations were related to his health, maintaining that he felt fit following a heavy travel schedule that included 25 rallies over the preceding month. He rejected inquiries regarding his physical condition during an exchange with a journalist.
