The brief

The mother of a two-year-old boy murdered on the New South Wales Mid North Coast has spoken in court during her former partner's sentencing hearing.

The story

A woman whose two-year-old child was murdered by her former partner addressed the New South Wales Supreme Court in Sydney to deliver a victim impact statement. The offender, a 40-year-old man who cannot be named for legal reasons, was found guilty of the boy's murder by a jury in July following a four-week trial.

During the sentencing proceedings, the child's mother told the court that meeting the offender was the greatest mistake of her life. She stated that the perpetrator altered her existence in ways that cannot be undone and declared that she will never forgive him for his actions.

Court proceedings established that the toddler died following an incident on the morning of May 23, 2022, on the state's Mid North Coast. The child's mother discovered the boy unresponsive when she attempted to wake him from sleep. The two-year-old was subsequently transported by air from Coffs Harbour to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle, where he succumbed to a catastrophic brain injury two days later.

A closer look

The legal process leading to the trial followed a coronial inquest held in September 2024, which determined that sufficient evidence existed to suggest the man may have been involved in the child's death. At the time of the fatal incident in 2022, the offender was in a relationship with the toddler's mother and living in the same residence.

Family members delivered their victim impact statements during the court session. The sentencing hearing for the convicted man has been adjourned and is scheduled to resume on December 2.
