Adelaide Crows footballer Josh Worrell has appeared in court to admit to a driving charge after striking a pedestrian in Port Road.
The story
Adelaide Crows professional footballer Josh Worrell appeared at the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Friday to face legal proceedings regarding a traffic incident earlier in the year. The 25-year-old defender was reported by police following a collision that occurred on July 10 on Port Road in Woodville, located on the edge of South Australia's capital.
During the court appearance, Worrell entered a guilty plea to a charge of driving without due care. Prosecutors stated before the court that the footballer had entered a pedestrian crossing and struck a pedestrian, noting that he had cut a red light and fallen well short of expected driving standards.
A second charge against the player, which involved failing to report to police after an accident, was dropped during the proceedings. Prosecutors acknowledged that it was fortunate the pedestrian did not sustain more serious injuries from the impact.
A closer look
According to statements presented in court, Worrell was travelling to a team training session at the time of the collision. Legal representatives for the player told the magistrate that the accident resulted from a momentary piece of bad driving and that the footballer was extremely remorseful and embarrassed.
The court heard that Worrell insisted on taking the injured victim to the hospital himself following the incident. He reportedly spent three hours at the medical facility to ensure the individual was alright, and prosecutors noted he took all reasonable action to assist the pedestrian.
Worrell's lawyer told the court that the defendant was acutely aware the outcome could have been significantly worse. Authorities and legal representatives both highlighted that luck played a role in preventing more severe harm to the pedestrian.
