Thomas Markle Arrested by US Federal Agents and Charged With Child Sexual Abuse Material Possession

Thomas Markle Sr., the father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, was arrested by federal agents in Florida and charged in connection with the possession of child sexual abuse material, according to United States law enforcement authorities. The 82-year-old was taken into custody at a nursing home near Tampa on Friday morning, local time, and was expected to make an initial court appearance in Tampa later in the day.

A 14-page federal criminal complaint filed in California alleges that Mr. Markle maintained approximately 78 items of child sexual abuse material across two Los Angeles-area storage units that he had rented for nearly twenty years. According to an affidavit accompanying the complaint, the recovered items included dozens of photographs, slides, film negatives, and books, with certain images showing a man identified by a witness as Mr. Markle alongside a nude underage girl.

Bill Essayli, first assistant United States attorney for the central district of California, stated that the allegations are extremely serious and that prosecutors intend to pursue the case to the fullest extent of federal law. If convicted on the single count of possession of child sexual abuse material, Mr. Markle faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison.

FBI Director Kash Patel stated that bureau agents and partners executed the arrest following an investigation that revealed the suspect was in possession of the illicit material. The United States Justice Department indicated that investigators interviewed a witness last month who had knowledge of the two California storage units, following earlier developments and reports originating from the Philippines.

The investigation into Mr. Markle has involved inquiries spanning multiple countries. Last month, public attention arose after claims were made regarding materials found at a residence in the Philippines where Mr. Markle previously lived prior to returning to the United States in May following a medical procedure. The Duchess of Sussex previously issued a statement indicating she was deeply distressed by allegations surrounding her father, with whom she has been estranged for approximately eight years.
