The brief

A British stuntman and actor has filed a legal claim seeking £200,000 in damages following an explosion on the set of the feature film Gladiator II.

The story

British actor and stuntman Edward Sarsfield has initiated legal action against August Street Films, one of the production companies behind the film Gladiator II. According to court documents filed at London's High Court, Sarsfield sustained burns and other injuries during a 2023 filming session in Morocco.

At the time of the incident, Sarsfield was working as an extra portraying a dead soldier positioned on the port side of a vessel. Court filings state that gas-powered flame bars were used on the ship to simulate fire for a scene depicting a coastal castle under siege. Without warning, a gas line exploded, generating flames approximately 20 feet high that ignited the performer's costume.

Sarsfield stated that he panicked, ran from the area, and fell several times before colleagues extinguished the flames by pouring bottled water over him. He was subsequently undressed, wrapped in clingfilm, and transported by helicopter to a hospital in Marrakesh. Four days later, he was repatriated to the United Kingdom for further medical treatment.

A closer look

The legal claim outlines that Sarsfield suffered flash burns covering approximately 15 percent of his body, including his face, arms, and hands, alongside injuries to both knees and his right wrist. The filing describes the pain as excruciating and notes that he experienced subsequent physical de-conditioning, mobility limitations, and psychological symptoms.

August Street Films has admitted liability for the accident, according to the legal defense. However, the company has not issued an admission regarding the specific injuries alleged or agreed to the requested £200,000 in damages. Gladiator II, directed by Sir Ridley Scott, was released in 2024 as a sequel to the 2000 film.
