The brief

Performer Jeremy Lloyd shares how a chance dating-app connection with stage manager David in Sydney blossomed into a relationship defined by resilience and shared life experiences.

The story

Performer Jeremy Lloyd initially maintained a personal rule against dating anyone within the theatre and dance industry. However, that guideline was broken after meeting David through a dating application in Sydney in early 2018.

At the time of their meeting, both men had recently exited long-term relationships and navigated significant health challenges. David had survived two strokes that required him to relearn how to walk and talk, while Lloyd had been diagnosed as HIV-positive at the age of 21, five years prior.

During their first date, which involved sharing two bottles of wine at David's apartment, the pair discussed television shows and films while intentionally avoiding professional topics. It was only when Lloyd stood up to visit the bathroom that he noticed theatre production posters for shows such as Priscilla, Strictly Ballroom, and West Side Story lining the walls, revealing David's profession as a stage manager.

A closer look

Despite his initial internal debate about whether to stay, Lloyd decided to remain for the evening, noting that David was exceptionally kind. Subsequent dates involved coffee outings and inexpensive Thai meals as the two men grew better acquainted.

On their fourth date, during the golden hour on Sydney's King Street, David confided that he was experiencing a midlife crisis. Having felt his pace slow down in a demanding stage management role following his strokes, he shared plans to leave his job and travel to London to reassess his path.

Listening to David express his anxieties about stepping away from his career, Lloyd recognized a profound sincerity and realized he had fallen in love. He encouraged David to undertake the trip to London while maintaining daily contact through messages throughout his travels.
