The brief

The United States State Department is offering up to $20 million through its Rewards for Justice program for information concerning Iran's nuclear program, facilities, and scientific personnel.

The story

The United States has announced a financial reward of up to $20 million, along with potential relocation, for details regarding Iran's nuclear program. According to statements published by the US military's Central Command on the social media platform X, the initiative is part of the State Department's Rewards for Justice program.

The funding targets information on Iranian nuclear facilities, equipment, and associated scientific personnel. The State Department stated that Iran's lack of compliance with the International Atomic Energy Agency regarding safeguards obligations has resulted in the agency losing continuity of knowledge concerning the production and inventory of key components, such as centrifuges.

Centrifuges are utilised to produce enriched uranium, which can serve as reactor fuel for civilian purposes or be enriched to higher purities for nuclear weapons. Meanwhile, Iran maintains that its nuclear program is strictly peaceful and that it has no intention of developing a nuclear weapon.

A closer look

The announcement arrives alongside broader US military and administrative actions regarding Iran. The US military established Task Force Iron Gate, operating from Tampa, Florida, to work alongside other government agencies to restrict the movement of weapons, sanctioned materials, and illegal revenue streams across Iranian borders. US Central Command estimates that its naval blockade of Iranian ports has prevented the export of more than $25 billion in crude oil.

US President Donald Trump stated that Tehran wants to make a deal, while also noting in prior media interviews that the US might need to address underground sites linked to the program. Previously, President Trump claimed that Iranian nuclear facilities had been obliterated following a US and Israeli bombing campaign. At the same time, reports indicate that Iran is reviewing proposals presented by chief mediator Qatar.
