The brief

A suspect with alleged far‑right links drove into the historic square, fired at people and a tram, and was shot by police after a three‑minute gunfight.

The story

At least six people were killed and more than a dozen injured when a gunman opened fire in Krakow’s Main Market Square shortly before 15:00 local time (14:00 GMT) on Tuesday, according to Polish police and BBC News. The 25‑year‑old suspect, described as having possible far‑right affiliations, drove a vehicle into the crowded square before firing at random pedestrians from the car.

Witness footage shows panic as shoppers and tourists fled the scene, while the sound of gunfire and the impact on a passing tram’s windows were captured on video. No tram passengers were reported injured, but the vehicle sustained shattered glass. Police officers arrived quickly, engaging the shooter in a gunfight that lasted about three minutes before the suspect was shot multiple times.

A closer look

Emergency services transported the injured to hospitals; the suspect remains in hospital after undergoing surgery for a gunshot wound. A police officer who confronted the gunman was also wounded, falling to the ground after being shot, according to BBC Verify footage. Police later searched the suspect’s home and found three bodies, confirming additional fatalities linked to the attack.

City officials have advised residents and visitors to avoid the Main Market Square while investigations continue. The motive behind the attack has not been officially confirmed, though authorities are examining the suspect’s alleged far‑right connections. The incident marks one of the deadliest shootings in Poland in recent years and has prompted heightened security measures in public spaces across the country.
