Glamorgan batsman Asa Tribe has been prevented from joining the England Lions squad in St Kitts and Nevis due to local entry restrictions following an Ebola outbreak in Kenya.
The story
Glamorgan opener Asa Tribe has been prevented from joining the England Lions tour of the Caribbean due to entry restrictions implemented in response to an Ebola outbreak in Kenya. Tribe, 22, had travelled to Nairobi last month to play three List A matches for Jersey, whom he is qualified to represent until earning a senior England cap.
Following his final match in Nairobi on October 27, Tribe intended to join the England Lions squad in St Kitts and Nevis for an upcoming series of T20 and 50-over matches against West Indies A. However, the government of St Kitts and Nevis enacted a 21-day entry ban on non-nationals arriving from Kenya and seven other African nations following the confirmation of nine Ebola cases, including two fatalities.
A spokesperson for the England and Wales Cricket Board stated that Tribe was unable to enter the host nation because of the recent travel history. The spokesperson confirmed that Tribe has returned to the United Kingdom and that officials are in communication with the relevant authorities regarding the situation.
A closer look
Tribe reportedly discovered the travel restriction while in Paris during his journey to the Caribbean. With all seven matches of the tour scheduled to take place in St Kitts and concluding on November 16, it is considered unlikely that he will join the squad later in the series without an official waiver.
In Tribe's absence, the England Lions opened their T20 series with an eight-wicket victory over West Indies A. Bowlers Naavya Sharma and Scott Currie dismissed the hosts for 98 runs, after which 18-year-old captain Thomas Rew scored an unbeaten 50 to guide the touring side to their target in 10.1 overs.
