The story

Kimi Antonelli has won the Formula 1 world championship at the age of 20, securing the title with a third-place finish at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez during the Mexican Grand Prix. Competing in only his second season in the sport, the Italian driver achieved nine victories across a remarkable campaign to claim his debut championship.

The race was won by Max Verstappen, with Lewis Hamilton finishing in second place. Following the award ceremony, Verstappen and Hamilton lifted Antonelli onto their shoulders on the podium to acknowledge the cheering crowd. Fellow drivers offered widespread praise for the newly crowned champion.

Lando Norris commended Antonelli's exceptional performance throughout the season, arguing that the young driver's success was occasionally underestimated simply because he made his accomplishments look effortless. Norris highlighted that Antonelli successfully competed against and defeated a teammate with significantly more experience in the sport.

Max Verstappen also praised the champion's consistency and composure.

Max Verstappen also praised the champion's consistency and composure. Verstappen noted that achieving such a milestone in a second Formula 1 season, while maintaining a solid drive and avoiding major errors at a young age, was exceptionally impressive.

During the post-race events, Puccini’s 'Nessun Dorma' played over the public address system while Antonelli stood alone on the podium. The driver later explained that the music held deep personal significance because it was a favorite of his late grandfather, leaving him visibly emotional as he reflected on the milestone.

Race engineer Peter Bonnington suggested that the championship victory could mark the beginning of a sustained period of success. Bonnington remarked that it was a privilege to share the journey, describing the title win as merely the opening chapter of Antonelli's career.
