A 14-year-old boy has contacted West Midlands Police after social media footage emerged showing a football supporter displaying a photograph of late cancer campaigner Bradley Lowery during a match.
The story
A 14-year-old boy has handed himself in to West Midlands Police following the circulation of a video on social media. According to law enforcement, the footage appeared to show a fan taunting Sunderland supporters with a photograph of Bradley Lowery during Saturday's Premier League match between Coventry City and Sunderland.
Bradley Lowery captured widespread attention as a young Sunderland fan before passing away at the age of six in 2017 from neuroblastoma, a rare form of childhood cancer. The Bradley Lowery Foundation was subsequently established to raise funds and awareness to support children facing similar diagnoses.
West Midlands Police confirmed that a thorough investigation is underway regarding the incident. Authorities stated that they understand the upset and outrage caused in the community and to the victim's family, adding that officers are keeping the family updated while working closely with both football clubs involved.
A closer look
Coventry City released a statement confirming they were aware of the footage circulating online. The club stated that it does not tolerate offensive behaviour and will co-operate fully with the relevant authorities to determine the appropriate course of action.
Gemma Lowery, Bradley's mother, released a statement through the Bradley Lowery Foundation expressing her heartbreak. She noted that the image used was one of her favourite photographs of her son, stating that her child deserves to be remembered with love rather than hate, and called for the young person involved to learn from the situation.
