Left-wing commentators and political figures have sharply criticized Democratic Representative Haley Stevens following her unexpected endorsement of Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers.
The story
Left-wing allies of Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed expressed outrage over the decision by Democratic Representative Haley Stevens to endorse her Republican rival, Mike Rogers. Stevens, who narrowly lost the Democratic primary to El-Sayed, had previously criticized El-Sayed regarding his response to antisemitism among some supporters. Following mutual public barbs, El-Sayed disinvited Stevens from a campaign event intended to demonstrate party unity, which preceded her endorsement of the GOP nominee.
The endorsement prompted extensive criticism across social media from progressive commentators and political figures. Streamer Hasan Piker accused Stevens on X of being self-interested and obsessed with Israel, arguing that the Senate election should instead focus on affordability and democratic values. Zeteo News editor-in-chief Mehdi Hasan similarly condemned Stevens on X, labeling her statements dishonest and alleging that Islamophobia motivated her decision.
Former DNC Vice Chair David Hogg also criticized Stevens, urging fellow Democrats to denounce her actions. Meanwhile, Pod Save America co-hosts Jon Lovett and Tommy Vietor questioned the consistency of the endorsement. Lovett described the shift as an incoherent disgrace, while Vietor noted that Stevens had previously insisted El-Sayed condemn an outside political advertisement before ultimately backing a candidate she had previously argued must be defeated.
A closer look
The political friction followed a controversial advertisement produced by Rebellion PAC, an organization founded by The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur, in support of El-Sayed's campaign. The commercial featured grocery shoppers connecting U.S. military support for Israel to domestic grocery prices. Stevens denounced the spot as antisemitic and called on El-Sayed to disavow it.
El-Sayed's campaign stated it had no affiliation with the advertisement, and El-Sayed subsequently stated he disagreed with its contents. Uygur defended the commercial, rejecting accusations that it targeted Jewish people and asserting that the advertisement focused strictly on Israel. Following the endorsement, Uygur contended that Stevens backed Rogers due to the influence of political lobbies.
