The brief

A rare localised ceasefire in Ukraine's Kherson region has expired after Russia declined an extension, while nationwide energy infrastructure attacks and counter-strikes continue.

The story

A temporary and localised ceasefire in Ukraine's front-line Kherson region ended on Sunday after Russia refused to extend the truce, according to Ukrainian officials. The pause in hostilities, which began on Tuesday and was described by officials as the longest of the conflict, enabled a humanitarian mission and allowed civilians to evacuate the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky. Neither side reported violations while the truce was active, and a Ukrainian lawmaker characterised it as the largest de-escalation since 2022. A Ukrainian official stated that Kyiv's foreign ministry had proposed an extension, but Russian authorities declined.

The limited pause was brokered with the assistance of US First Lady Melania Trump and Pope Leo XIV. Pope Leo expressed hope that the temporary arrangement would strengthen the desire for dialogue and foster new peace initiatives. Conversely, an anonymous Ukrainian military officer raised concerns that the renewed fighting could intensify, noting that Russian forces deployed across the Dnipro river had utilised the quiet period to accumulate fresh troops, move ammunition supplies, and gather intelligence on Ukrainian positions using surveillance drones. Local residents described the brief respite positively, with one gardener calling it a breath of fresh air.

While the Kherson truce held, combat persisted in other regions. According to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, an overnight strike in the Vinnytsia region killed two individuals, including a 13-year-old girl. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that Ukrainian forces struck a major missile fuel manufacturer in Russia's Rostov region, causing a fire and damaging four production facilities. Additionally, the Ukrainian air force stated that the country's air alert application was apparently subjected to hostile interference on Sunday evening, generating a warning regarding non-existent radiation over Kyiv.

Energy infrastructure across Ukraine sustained heavy damage from recent attacks.

Energy infrastructure across Ukraine sustained heavy damage from recent attacks. President Zelensky stated that Russian strikes hit energy facilities in four regions overnight on Saturday, leaving hundreds of thousands of homes without power. Emergency power cuts were implemented nationwide as repair crews worked to restore services. In the capital of Kyiv, electricity was cut off for the majority of the day alongside disruptions to water supplies, while the Dnipropetrovsk region continued recovery efforts with tens of thousands of customers still awaiting power restoration by Sunday evening.

Addressing the broader military situation, President Zelensky stated that the intensity of Russian strikes had reached extremely high levels over the past week, asserting that Russia sought to exploit a shortage of ballistic missile interceptors. Zelensky reiterated appeals to the United States, Europe, and other international partners for immediate aid, specifically requesting Patriot missile systems, which he identified as the sole effective weapon against Russian ballistic missiles, while acknowledging prior international support and long-term commitments.
