Mourners, teammates and football officials filled Tenerife's stadium for a 90-minute memorial service following the death of 30-year-old striker Jesus De Miguel.
The story
Thousands of mourners assembled at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez on Saturday to bid farewell to Tenerife striker Jesus De Miguel, who died at the age of 30. The player suffered a cardiac arrest following a collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono during a match on Monday. After being transported to intensive care, his death was confirmed by the Spanish second-division club on Tuesday morning.
A large banner featuring a black-and-white photograph of the athlete alongside the inscription "Forever Demi" was displayed behind a stage erected in the centre of the pitch. Supporters in the stands chanted "De Miguel, we love you" following a screening of video footage capturing his Tenerife debut.
Team captain Enric Gallego delivered a tearful address during the 90-minute ceremony in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, pausing frequently as he spoke to the stadium. Gallego stated that speaking of his teammate in the past tense felt tremendously unfair and remarked that the squad was still struggling to accept the loss.
A closer look
Players sat on the pitch alongside representatives from every club across Spain's top two divisions, including Real Madrid director Emilio Butragueno. The memorial event, which included speeches from club directors, concluded with a religious service.
In addition to the stadium gathering, matches across Spain's divisions observed a minute of silence over the weekend to honour the late footballer.
