The brief

The Atlanta Dream defeated the Golden State Valkyries 80-69 in Game 6, setting up the first Game 7 in WNBA history.

The story

The Atlanta Dream forced a decisive seventh game in the WNBA Finals by securing an 80-69 victory over the visiting Golden State Valkyries on Thursday afternoon. Playing before a packed crowd at State Farm Arena during an unusual lunchtime tipoff, the fourth-seeded Dream led from the opening minute to level the best-of-seven series at 3-3. Both franchises are competing for their first league championship in the second year of the WNBA's expanded seven-game format.

Atlanta established control early by connecting on six three-pointers and shooting 73.3 percent from the floor during a blistering opening quarter. After Golden State's Gabby Williams scored a free throw to narrow the early deficit to 6-5, the Dream strung together 13 consecutive points to build a 19-5 advantage. The lead eventually ballooned to 25 points before halftime, while Atlanta's defence restricted the Valkyries to just 26 points in the first half.

Allisha Gray led the charge for the winners with 23 points, sinking five three-pointers despite managing a hand injury throughout the postseason. Rhyne Howard contributed 21 points, Angel Reese recorded 15 points, 14 rebounds and six assists, and Jordin Canada added 10 points. For Golden State, Gabby Williams scored a game-high 26 points and Tiffany Hayes chipped in 15. The Valkyries struggled from beyond the arc, making only seven of their 27 three-point attempts.

A closer look

The afternoon start time was arranged by the league to accommodate an Atlanta Hawks home game against the Cleveland Cavaliers scheduled for Thursday evening. Despite the timing, Atlanta players expressed appreciation for the energetic crowd that turned out for the franchise milestone. "To be able to come here at 12:30 on a Thursday with so many things going on in the world from school to work, we’re just super thankful," Angel Reese said.

With the series now tied, the teams will travel to San Francisco's Chase Center for a winner-take-all Game 7 on Saturday night. Atlanta head coach Karl Smesko noted that his squad remains focused on the final hurdle. "There’s a mentality right now of, 'We’re happy we won, but we know the job is not done,'" Smesko said. Meanwhile, Valkyries head coach Natalie Nakase stated she plans to review the film to address execution issues before the final showdown.
