The brief

Fashion experts and political observers examine how the plain black garment has transitioned from a basic undergarment to a deliberate sartorial signal for political figures internationally.

The story

The plain black T-shirt has increasingly moved from a hidden layer of clothing to the forefront of modern political styling, functioning as a sartorial shortcut to signal power and authority. According to fashion experts, the garment radiates seriousness and a no-nonsense demeanor while offering a departure from traditional corporate attire.

Progressive Democrat Abdul El-Sayed adopted a tight black T-shirt as his signature look throughout his campaign, pairing it with jeans and children's friendship bracelets. El-Sayed characterized his approach as combining a minimal aesthetic with maximal politics. He explained in an interview that the garment serves as an ideal option for navigating diverse environments throughout the day, while contrasting with traditional boxy suit aesthetics by aiming to soften the boundary between politicians and the public.

Other political figures have similarly adopted the garment. Andy Burnham incorporates the black T-shirt into a public-facing style, which prompted commentary from Kemi Badenoch. In July, former Israeli prime minister Naftali Bennett shifted from smart shirts and suits to a black T-shirt and jeans during a political comeback attempt, a wardrobe adjustment reported to be a deliberate campaign strategy to present a younger and more accessible image. Additionally, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has utilized the black T-shirt as a symbol representing patriotism and solidarity.

A closer look

Johnny Davis, the luxury director of Esquire magazine, associates the black T-shirt with cultural figures such as actor Jason Statham, fictional character John Wick, and musician Henry Rollins, noting that the look suggests an individual focused on accomplishing tasks regardless of circumstances. Davis contrasts this aesthetic with traditional corporate power dressing, describing the wardrobe choice as a distinct attempt to establish an alternative form of authority.

This styling trend succeeds earlier visual strategies where politicians removed jackets and rolled up shirtsleeves to convey urgency, such as appearances by Keir Starmer and former practices by figures like Barack Obama. Analysts suggest the black T-shirt represents an evolution in political dress codes, eliminating the need for traditional adjustments like rolling up sleeves.
