The brief

Kalyn Ponga makes a rapid recovery from surgery to inspire the Kiwis past Tonga and into their first men's Rugby League World Cup final in 13 years.

The story

New Zealand full-back Kalyn Ponga made a remarkable return from injury to help secure his team a place in the Men's Rugby League World Cup final. The 28-year-old delivered a starring performance as the Kiwis overcame Tonga 34-10, advancing to the tournament's final stage for the first time in 13 years.

Ponga's participation in the match followed a rapid recovery from surgery. During New Zealand's tournament opener against Australia in Sydney on 15 October, Ponga scored two second-half tries before suffering a broken left forearm in a tackle with Cameron Munster. He played the final 20 minutes of that 24-22 defeat with the fracture, subsequently requiring an operation involving a rod or plate.

Initially named as a reserve before moving to the interchange bench, Ponga made a shock return to the starting 13 just 23 days after his surgery. New Zealand head coach Stacey Jones praised the player's resilience, noting that management only confirmed his fitness after the team's second-to-last training session.

A closer look

Playing with black protective bandaging taped to his left forearm, Ponga was directly involved in four of New Zealand's six tries. His footwork and handling set up scores for Briton Nikora, Casey McLean, and Xavier Willison.

Ponga also influenced the contest by clearing out opposing full-back Lehi Hopoate as he fumbled a grubber kick in the in-goal area, allowing Dane Gagai to score New Zealand's second try. In defence, Ponga executed a try-saving block on Demitric Vaimauga, demonstrating no lingering limitations from his recent arm injury.

The victory sets up a World Cup final appearance for New Zealand, alongside a separate achievement by the nation's women's team, which also advanced to their respective World Cup final after defeating Samoa.
