The story
Police have charged a 51-year-old Footscray man with murder and intentionally causing serious injury following a fatal stabbing in Melbourne's central business district. According to Victoria Police, the incident unfolded on Friday just after 8 pm on Frederick Way, near the Queen Victoria Market.
Investigators stated that two delivery riders confronted a man who was allegedly tampering with their bicycles. A physical altercation subsequently occurred, during which the 51-year-old man allegedly stabbed both workers. Emergency services arrived at the scene, but 47-year-old Jianming Feng could not be saved.
The second delivery worker, a 34-year-old man, sustained serious injuries and was transported to a hospital, where he remained receiving treatment. The suspect was arrested by police on Saturday and subsequently charged on Monday morning. He was expected to appear before the Melbourne Magistrates' Court.
A closer look
Mr Feng, a Chinese national originally from Shaanxi Province and a father of two, had lived in Australia for approximately nine years. Yahoo Australia reported that his relatives, including his wife Xu, two children, and four parents, relied on his employment to support themselves.
In the wake of the incident, mourners gathered near the state library over the weekend to leave floral tributes, cards, and memorial notes. A GoFundMe online fundraiser established by the Melbourne Chinatown Business Association raised nearly $390,000 by Monday morning to assist Mr Feng's family with funeral costs and emergency travel expenses.
