The brief

Leader Steven Miles attempts to steer Queensland Labor past its greatest challenge in decades while confronting a popular LNP government and an advancing One Nation.

The story

Queensland Labor has reached the midpoint of a rare opposition term, with leader Steven Miles attempting to achieve a political comeback not managed since 1911. Serving as premier for ten months after succeeding Annastacia Palaszczuk, Miles is seeking to return to the top office. However, analysts and pollsters note the party confronts severe hurdles, including an administration under Premier David Crisafulli that maintains public popularity.

RedBridge Group director and pollster Kos Samaras stated that Queensland Labor is currently confronting its most severe challenge in decades. According to Samaras, the opposition is locked in a tight contest with One Nation to secure its position as the state's second most popular political party. He observed that the political landscape features not only a popular LNP government, which typically takes multiple electoral cycles to overcome, but also an insurgent One Nation movement gaining traction.

While federal polling typically indicates that One Nation siphons votes primarily from the Coalition, data in Queensland suggests the party's vote share is drawing evenly from both the LNP and Labor. Nearly three decades following the initial political breakthrough by Pauline Hanson's party in the state, polling indicates One Nation is once again positioned near a significant political advance.

A closer look

Compounding these electoral pressures, none of the 36 current Labor MPs have prior experience serving in opposition before the ongoing term. The party is also navigating internal friction originating from its right faction.

Meanwhile, the LNP has consistently alleged that internal party colleagues are targeting Miles's position as leader. When questioned on ABC Radio Brisbane by Ellen Fanning regarding whether he faced a specific deadline to reverse the party's standing, the opposition leader denied that any such discussions had taken place.
