The story
A 90-year-old woman who sustained injuries during the Bondi beach terror attack has died in hospital almost a year after the massacre. Eva Geller was shot on 14 December 2025 during a Hanukkah festival event and experienced repeated hospital admissions throughout the following year for treatment.
A senior Jewish community source stated that Geller had recently returned to hospital after developing an infection and subsequently died following a stroke. Her funeral was arranged to be held on Monday, while a family spokesperson issued a request for privacy during the difficult period.
New South Wales police acknowledged the death in a statement on Friday afternoon. A police spokesperson indicated that authorities are awaiting further advice and maintaining communication with the office of the coroner.
A closer look
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed sadness regarding the announcement, stating that Geller's life was permanently altered by an act of terror and antisemitism, and offered support to her relatives, friends, and the broader Jewish community.
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns described the development as heartbreaking, offering his thoughts to the affected family and community. NSW opposition leader Kellie Sloane noted that the death serves as a reminder of the lasting pain stemming from the previous year's violence and emphasised the ongoing need to support victims and first responders.
The initial attack occurred on 14 December of the previous year when 24-year-old Naveed Akram and 50-year-old Sajid Akram opened fire at the Bondi beach Hanukkah festival. The incident resulted in 15 fatalities and left 40 individuals injured.
