Connecticut Democrat Chris Murphy is recovering at Johns Hopkins Hospital after experiencing a stroke over the weekend.
The story
United States Senator Chris Murphy has been hospitalized following a stroke, according to a statement released on Sunday by his chief of staff, Allison Herwitt. The 53-year-old Democrat sought medical attention on Saturday after experiencing numbness in his arm while attending his son's hockey game.
Following an examination, medical personnel confirmed the stroke, prompting Murphy's transfer to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore for monitoring. Herwitt stated that the senator remains awake and alert, noting that medical staff are encouraged by his ongoing progress and anticipate a full recovery.
Prior to his hospitalization, Murphy spent recent weeks traveling across the country to campaign for Democratic candidates participating in Tuesday's midterm elections. His schedule included planned campaign appearances in New Hampshire alongside Senate candidate Chris Pappas, as well as recent visits to states such as Michigan and Florida.
Elected to the U.S.
Elected to the U.S. Senate in 2024 for his third term, Murphy previously entered Congress in 2006 and has maintained a prominent profile regarding gun reform issues. Political observers have occasionally noted him as a potential candidate for the 2028 presidential election, though Murphy has previously emphasized his primary focus on current political and democratic concerns.
State officials offered public statements of support following the news of his medical emergency. Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont posted on social media that he and his wife were keeping the senator and his family in their prayers, praising Murphy's advocacy for the state. Additionally, Connecticut Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz expressed relief regarding his condition and shared well wishes for his recovery.
