The brief

Local authorities seek assistance from Madrid after thousands of people arrive on boats since the beginning of November.

The story

Authorities on El Hierro have officially declared an emergency and requested assistance from the central government in Madrid following a sharp rise in migrant and refugee boat arrivals. Alpidio Armas, head of the governing council for the island, stated that officials are deeply concerned by the sudden increase, which has prompted the local administration to seek a framework of cooperation with higher-level institutions.

According to figures from local authorities, more than 3,300 people have reached the island aboard approximately 30 vessels since the beginning of November. The influx presents a significant logistical challenge for the small island, which has a resident population of approximately 11,400 people. Officials are actively working to secure temporary accommodation for the new arrivals.

Mr. Armas noted that conditions at the island’s hospital have deteriorated to an undesirable state. Fernando Clavijo, the regional leader of the Canary Islands, described the situation as absolutely unsustainable in remarks reported by the Reuters news agency. Maritime rescue services recorded that 3,261 migrants and refugees were rescued off the coast of the archipelago during the first six days of November alone.

Mr.

Mr. Clavijo stated that current arrival numbers are approaching record levels seen in 2024, with the pace exceeding those previous figures on certain days. In response to the arrivals, local authorities have diverted buses to support migration operations and brought in additional medical staff from neighboring islands.

The Atlantic passage from West Africa to the Canary Islands remains one of the most perilous migration routes globally. According to survivor accounts cited by the AFP news agency, two individuals were found dead on a vessel traveling toward the Canaries this week, and five others are believed to have perished during the journey. At least nine migrants or refugees have lost their lives off the islands in recent weeks.

Migrant arrivals across the region reached a record high of more than 46,000 individuals in 2024 before experiencing a sharp decline. That decrease followed the implementation of tighter surveillance measures and increased cooperation between authorities and countries of origin and transit.
