The brief

British set designer and artist Es Devlin brings her first Australian exhibition, featuring five large-scale immersive installations, to the newly opened Powerhouse Parramatta.

The story

British artist and set designer Es Devlin is showcasing her first exhibition in Australia as part of the opening weekend events at Powerhouse Parramatta. Titled The Turning, the showcase comprises five large-scale immersive installations designed to actively involve visitors in the artistic experience.

Central to the exhibition is an interactive component where participants sit opposite a stranger in silence for 15 minutes, sustaining a gaze before leaving a trace of their encounter through drawing. Devlin noted that sustaining such a gaze for that duration is unusual and alters perspective.

Devlin's extensive career spans decades in theatre, concerts, fashion shows, and major art installations. She has previously contributed creative direction for two Olympic ceremonies, a Super Bowl half-time show, and world tours for prominent musical acts including Adele, Beyonce, The Weeknd, and U2.

A closer look

Throughout the five installations, audiences are invited to contribute directly through drawing and personal reflection. Devlin stated that the audience serves as the protagonist of the exhibition, emphasizing that the works remain incomplete until visitors arrive and participate.

Ahead of the public opening, Devlin traveled to Sydney and spent several days alongside her team finalizing projections, lighting systems, and sound designs for the installations. The exhibition is featured during the opening weekend of the Powerhouse Parramatta venue.
