The brief

Fresh photographs show the Welsh‑shot continuation of the Regency drama, confirming cast returns and confirming production details ahead of its winter broadcast.

The story

The BBC has released a set of previously unseen images from the three‑part Christmas special of its period drama The Other Bennet Sister. The series, which reimagines the life of Mary Bennet from Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, concluded its first season with Mary (Ella Bruccoleri) agreeing to marry Tom Hayward (Donal Finn). The new stills give a preview of the upcoming episodes while confirming that filming wrapped at the end of August.

The special was produced by Cardiff‑based Bad Wolf and, like the first series, was filmed largely in south Wales. Locations cited include Merthyr Mawr in Bridgend County, the Gower peninsula and Brecon in Powys. The production schedule continued over the summer months, with the crew completing principal photography before the autumn holiday period.

Returning cast members include Ruth Jones, who reprises her role as the often‑cruel Mrs Bennet, as well as Tanya Reynolds as Caroline Bingley and Laurie Davidson as Mr Ryder. Regulars such as Poppy Gilbert (Lizzie Darcy), Maddie Close (Jane Bingley), Grace Hogg‑Robinson (Lydia Wickham) and Molly Wright (Kitty Buncock) also appear, while Nerys Amber‑Stocks joins the ensemble as Mary’s housemaid Lucy.

A closer look

The BBC has offered a brief teaser for the special, noting that Mary’s new marital status will bring a shift in identity: “With marriage comes a new identity and the question remains: who will Mary become as Mrs Hayward?” No further plot details have been disclosed, but the network expects the Christmas episodes to continue the series’ exploration of Regency social pressures and the limited options available to women of the era.

The first series attracted 6.5 million UK viewers within its initial 28 days, indicating strong audience interest ahead of the holiday run. The new images and casting confirmations aim to sustain that momentum as the show returns for its festive continuation.
