Chinese brands are gaining ground worldwide in the consumer technology industry, despite privacy and security concerns. According to DW News, this is evident in the action camera market, where DJI and Insta360 have surpassed GoPro, the former market leader. GoPro's market share has declined significantly, from over 70% in 2015 to a current market share of less than 10%.
Chinese brands have not only caught up but surpassed once-dominant Western rivals across the consumer technology industry, from smart TVs to robot vacuums. According to Chris Pereira, a Canadian entrepreneur and author with over 20 years of experience in China, Chinese companies have achieved this success through fierce domestic competition, highly integrated supply chains, and a can-do business culture that allows companies to innovate and respond to problems quickly.
Chinese companies are also leveraging industrial automation, the strategic use of AI in manufacturing, and relatively cheap labor to achieve significantly lower production costs and faster innovation cycles. This has led to well over half of new consumer tech products globally coming from Chinese suppliers, according to Pereira.
In the electric vehicle market, Chinese brands such as BYD, Xpeng, and other Chinese car manufacturers sold almost two-thirds of all electric cars last year, surpassing incumbents like Tesla. In the robot vacuum market, Chinese brands dominate the global market, leaving former pioneer US company iRobot struggling to compete.
