The brief

Democrat James Talarico has won the United States Senate race in Texas, ending decades of Republican dominance and altering the political landscape in the nation's second-largest state.

The story

Democrat James Talarico won the US Senate race in Texas during the midterm elections, ending a 38-year drought for his party in the traditional Republican stronghold. Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton, the state attorney general and an ally of US President Donald Trump, in one of the most closely watched contests of the election cycle.

Addressing a jubilant crowd at his election night party at a performing arts center in downtown Austin, Talarico stated that they had defeated Goliath and proven that wealth cannot match the people of Texas. The victory has major implications for control of the US Senate, where Republicans were defending a narrow majority, and complicates efforts by the Trump administration to advance its legislative agenda during the final two years of the presidency.

No Democrat had won a Senate seat in Texas since Lloyd Bentsen in 1988, and no Democrat had secured any statewide office since 1994. Donald Trump had carried the state by nearly 14 percentage points in the 2024 presidential election. Talarico, a 37-year-old Presbyterian seminarian, former middle school teacher, and state representative, will become the Senate's youngest member. He replaced John Cornyn, who lost a Republican primary to Paxton following an endorsement intervention by Trump.

A closer look

Paxton's campaign faced scrutiny regarding controversies, including his 2023 impeachment by the Republican-controlled Texas House of Representatives over corruption and abuse of power allegations, though he was later acquitted by the state senate. Despite record-breaking spending topping half a billion dollars, which included at least $212 million from SpaceX founder Elon Musk, Paxton struggled to generate broad enthusiasm among voters.

Talarico built his campaign around economic concerns, Christian faith, and a message of political unity, appealing to independent and Republican voters disillusioned with the administration. Adam Green, co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, remarked that Talarico demonstrated a successful path for Democrats in the state by challenging billionaire power and calling for structural change. Additional celebrations and watch parties were held in cities including Houston, where supporters described the outcome as a generational shift in Texas politics.
