The brief

Warrington Wolves head coach Sam Burgess has committed his future to the Super League club by signing a contract extension that runs for another two years.

The story

Warrington Wolves head coach Sam Burgess has signed a new two-year contract with the Super League club. The 37-year-old former dual-code England international has recorded 63 victories across 99 matches since taking charge ahead of the 2024 campaign.

During his tenure, Warrington has reached three major finals. The team finished as runners-up in the Challenge Cup twice and lost to Wakefield Trinity in last season's Grand Final at Old Trafford. Following the defeat last month, Burgess confirmed that he had given his word to club owner Simon Moran to remain in the position.

Reflecting on the agreement, Burgess told the club website that extending his time with the team is a real honour. He expressed enthusiasm for continuing to lead the club forward and stated his belief that the squad is close to achieving its ultimate goals.

The club's performance has fluctuated across his three seasons in charge.

The club's performance has fluctuated across his three seasons in charge. Warrington finished third in Burgess's debut year before dropping to eighth place in 2025. The team rebounded by finishing third again last season and reaching their first Grand Final appearance since 2018, aided by the arrival of experienced assistant coach Steve McNamara, who has since departed to manage Hull FC.

Director of rugby Gary Chambers praised the head coach's impact on the organisation. Chambers stated that Burgess is a vital part of the club's development, highlighting his passion for youth pathways that enable talented young players to succeed in the first-grade environment. Chambers added that reaching three major finals in three years demonstrates the team's proximity to success.
