The story
Tenerife forward Jesús de Miguel has died at the age of 30 following a collision during a Spanish second division match against visiting Andorra. The fixture, which took place at Tenerife’s Estadio Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez, had been postponed by 24 hours due to the risk of torrential rain on the island. The incident occurred during added time in the 96th minute with the match tied at 2-2.
As the ball was cleared from the Tenerife penalty area toward midfield, de Miguel chased it into space. Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono rushed out of his goal, jumping forward and striking the attacking player in the chest with his knee inside the centre circle. Referee Manuel Ángel Pérez Hernández immediately showed Owono a red card, and players from both teams frantically beckoned medical staff onto the pitch as de Miguel lay unconscious.
The match was formally abandoned by the referee in the 108th minute as players stood in tears. Medics successfully restored de Miguel’s pulse in an ambulance while transporting him to the Hospital Universitario de Nuestra Señora de Candelaria in Santa Cruz, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit in a critical condition. Although he was initially reported as stable and able to breathe unassisted, his neurological condition worsened overnight.
CD Tenerife announced that de Miguel passed away at 8:00 am on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
