WA government ministers push for a merger of three public universities.

The full report

Tertiary and International Education Minister Tony Buti has proposed a merger of three public universities in Western Australia: Curtin University, Murdoch University, and the University of Western Australia. According to ABC News, Buti believes the merger will ensure WA universities remain "highly competitive, accessible and relevant".

The proposal has been met with opposition, including from two of the universities in question. A feasibility study about the merger was reported to be riddled with AI-generated errors. Despite this, Buti is pressing ahead with the plan.

Buti and WA Premier Roger Cook are confident that the merger will create a "once-in-a-generation opportunity". They argue that the current system has duplicated offerings, fragmented investment, and limited scale across the universities.

The proposed merger is expected to have major economic benefits and improved outcomes for students. However, the opposition to the plan remains strong, with posters opposing the merger being placed around the Curtin University campus.

Buti has been a strong advocate for the merger, even playing "an ace" in parliament to drown out some of the noise. He believes that the merger will address the challenges facing the universities and provide a better future for students.
