WA artist with cerebral palsy finds voice through painting

The full report

Colin Hanssen, a 31-year-old West Australian artist, has caught the attention of art curators across the state with his unique style of painting. Hanssen, who lives with cerebral palsy, has been creating art for the past six months, using his wheelchair and right hand to blend colourful and earthy tones.

Hanssen's art combines performance with paint to create abstract pieces, which have been displayed in his Redmond studio, on the outskirts of Albany. His mother, Wendy Hanssen, said that painting has become a vital form of self-expression for her son, who is largely non-verbal.

Hanssen's talent was realised in an art therapy class six months ago, where his unique skill was brought to the forefront. His mother said, "That was when it was brought home that actually this could be an outlet for Colin."

Hanssen's recent selection for this year's Southern Art and Craft Trail, an event which highlights talent across the region, shows just how much he has exceeded expectations. His mother said, "We went and saw a neurosurgeon who told us to love Colin while we've got him, because he wasn't going to make it to his first birthday."

Hanssen's art has become a vital form of self-expression, allowing him to express his lived experience. His unique style and talent have caught the attention of art curators across the state, and he is preparing his first collection to be featured in Perth galleries.
