The brief

The United States carried out a strike on Qeshm Island following an incident involving a U.S. aircraft, as voters prepare to cast ballots in midterm elections.

The story

The United States launched military strikes on Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz, according to statements from U.S. officials reported by CBS and the BBC. Iranian state news agency IRNA reported multiple explosions on the island on Monday. U.S. officials described the action as a limited, defensive strike executed in response to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps firing upon a United States aircraft.

The military development occurred on the eve of U.S. midterm elections, which will determine congressional control. President Donald Trump addressed voters during a media appearance, characterizing the ongoing conflict as a "soft war" rather than a traditional engagement and asserting that the United States holds a position of total strength. The conflict began in February following attacks by the U.S. and Israel.

A closer look

President Trump stated that he is in no rush to resume full-scale military strikes against Iran, though he warned that the U.S. could target Pickaxe Mountain, a site linked to Iran's nuclear program, if current negotiations fail. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi informed IRNA that intensive indirect talks with the U.S. are underway via mediators, adding that Tehran remains prepared for both diplomatic and military outcomes.

The financial cost of the conflict has emerged as a central issue during the midterm elections, with Pentagon estimates placing total expenditures at more than $47 billion. While some lawmakers and critics have raised concerns over the economic impact and surging gas prices, President Trump defended the expenditures as necessary to dismantle Iran's military and nuclear capabilities. A Fox News poll indicated that 71 percent of respondents believe the administration lacks a clear plan to conclude the war.
