The brief

Two years into his second term, the administration's actions regarding Ukraine, NATO allies, and international conflicts have drawn global attention.

The story

During his campaign for the White House, Donald Trump pledged to pursue an "America First" foreign policy focused on keeping the United States out of foreign conflicts and prioritizing domestic concerns. However, two years into his second presidential term, his administration has engaged extensively in international disputes and military matters.

A central component of Trump's platform was a vow to resolve Russia's war in Ukraine, initially claiming he would end the conflict on his first day in office. The war has now entered its fifth year, accompanied by significant shifts in Washington's diplomatic posture toward Kyiv. Bilateral relations deteriorated notably in February 2025 during an Oval Office meeting where Trump and Vice-President JD Vance publicly criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for allegedly lacking appreciation for American assistance. Following this confrontation, the US temporarily suspended military aid and intelligence sharing.

US policies concerning weapons deliveries to Ukraine have experienced repeated fluctuations. While Kyiv has persistently requested additional Patriot air defence systems for urban and infrastructure protection, shipments have remained restricted due to depleted American stockpiles. Subsequently, Trump hosted Russian President Vladimir Putin at an Alaska summit to discuss the war, though negotiations yielded no breakthroughs. Tensions between Washington and Kyiv persisted following Trump's announcement of a diesel export deal with Russia, which Zelensky publicly condemned. Meanwhile, Putin proposed a trilateral discussion involving Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping regarding Ukraine, though Kyiv was excluded from the proposed meeting.

A closer look

Trump's foreign policy approach has also created friction with traditional US allies, particularly regarding expressed ambitions to acquire territory from NATO partners. Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory, emerged as a central point of contention as Trump asserted a national security requirement for American acquisition. In January 2026, he declined to rule out military force to secure control over the island, notwithstanding explicit statements from Greenland and Denmark that the territory was not for sale.

The statements regarding Greenland elicited substantial concern among European allies, prompting multiple NATO nations to deploy military personnel to the territory in solidarity. In response, Trump threatened to impose increased tariffs on nations that opposed his territorial plans.
