The story
Several political candidates with African roots secured historic victories during the United States midterm elections, establishing milestones in federal representation. The elections, which take place halfway through a presidential term to determine congressional and local offices, featured successful campaigns by figures including Abdul El-Sayed and Melat Kiros.
Abdul El-Sayed, a 42-year-old born to Egyptian immigrant parents, won election as Michigan's new senator, positioning him to become the first Muslim senator. During his campaign, the former public health administrator faced attacks from conservative media and President Donald Trump, who accused him of supporting the Muslim Brotherhood. El-Sayed rejected these allegations.
El-Sayed's campaign utilised a social media-first strategy, incorporating TikTok edits and Gen Z humour to reach young voters. His platform focused on a progressive agenda that included Medicare for All, affordable housing, and reducing corporate influence in politics, alongside criticism of US military aid to Israel. Following his victory, he addressed Vice-President JD Vance, who had campaigned against him and is scheduled to swear him into office in January.
A closer look
In Colorado's 1st District, 29-year-old Melat Kiros became the first Gen Z woman elected to the US Congress. Born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Kiros moved to Denver as an infant and had no prior experience in elected office. She defeated a 15-term incumbent in the Democratic primary before winning a landslide victory in the general election.
Kiros campaigned on a progressive platform centered on the cost of living, universal childcare, and Medicare for All. Endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America, her policy positions also included calls to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement and to end US military aid to Israel. Alongside El-Sayed, other candidates with Nigerian heritage and additional African backgrounds also won seats in the midterms.
