The brief

The 41-year-old forward concludes a 23-year career with Portugal, holding global records for appearances and goals.

The story

Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international soccer at the age of 41. According to reports from ABC News and Al Jazeera, the decision concludes a 23-year international career that included six World Cups and six European Championships.

Ronaldo departs as the all-time leader in men's international soccer history, having accumulated 234 appearances and 146 goals for Portugal. His career highlights feature captaining the national team to its first major title at Euro 2016, as well as securing Nations League trophies in 2019 and 2025. He also holds the record for scoring for Portugal in 23 consecutive calendar years from 2004 to 2026, alongside 11 World Cup goals across 27 tournament matches.

The announcement precedes Portugal's upcoming roster reveal by coach Jorge Jesus for Nations League matches against Denmark and Wales. The retirement also follows a recent 30-day suspension and a €255 fine incurred by the forward after he walked out on the national team following a dispute with Jesus, triggered by being kept on the bench during a previous fixture.

A closer look

In a video published on Instagram, Ronaldo acknowledged that leaving the training camp was not handled in the optimal manner, while also claiming that Jesus had broken his word on multiple occasions. In statements to Portugal's Channel 11, Jesus confirmed that he had previously asked the player to remain with the squad, expressing that Ronaldo will continue to hold a permanent place in the hearts of the Portuguese people and the national team.

Ronaldo made his senior debut for Portugal as an 18-year-old substitute against Kazakhstan in a friendly match, initially wearing the number 17 jersey before acquiring the number 7 shirt following Luis Figo's retirement in 2006. His final appearance for the national side took place on September 24 in a 1-0 victory over Wales.
