The brief

World number three Carlos Alcaraz defeated American Ben Shelton in straight sets on Sunday to secure his maiden Paris Masters crown and the ninth ATP 1000 title of his career.

The story

Carlos Alcaraz secured his first Paris Masters title on Sunday by defeating American Ben Shelton 7-6 (7/5), 7-5 in a straight-sets encounter that lasted just under two hours. The victory served as a measure of revenge for the 23-year-old Spaniard, whose US Open title defense earlier in the season was ended by Shelton in a five-set quarterfinal encounter in New York.

The opening set remained deadlocked until the tie-break, where Shelton committed three forehand errors, allowing Alcaraz to claim the advantage. In the second set, world number four Shelton capitalized on double faults and wayward topspins from Alcaraz to take a 3-2 lead and extended his advantage with two aces. However, Alcaraz responded with a break to level the score at 4-4, hitting two cross-court winners as his opponent faltered. With Alcaraz leading 6-5, Shelton struggled while serving to stay in the match, missing two forehands before the seven-time Grand Slam champion secured the victory with a backhand down the line.

Reflecting on his triumph after receiving the trophy from former Paris Masters winner Boris Becker, Alcaraz noted that he had been chasing the elusive crown for a long time following previous losses at the tournament. The world number three controlled the contest from the baseline, becoming the first Spanish champion at the event since David Ferrer won in 2012. For Shelton, the result marked his first defeat in an ATP Masters final after victories in his two previous appearances at that level during the past two editions of the Canadian Open.

A closer look

The victory marks the ninth 1000-level title of Alcaraz's career and his fifth tour-level triumph of the year. It also extends his winning streak to nine matches, following a victory at the 500-level tournament in Vienna. Earlier in the week in Paris, Alcaraz saved two match points during a quarterfinal comeback against Taylor Fritz, echoing his previous success at Roland Garros.

Alcaraz will now turn his attention to the ATP Finals, scheduled to run from November 15 to 22 in Turin, where he will seek his first title at the season-ending event. He enters the tournament following a year that included winning the Australian Open and two French Opens, maintaining an undefeated record in title matches in the French capital.
