The brief

The federal independent member remains receiving medical care in Melbourne following severe injuries sustained outside her electorate office in October.

The story

Federal independent Member of Parliament Helen Haines has reached a stable condition during her ongoing hospital recovery, according to an update issued by The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne. The 65-year-old parliamentarian has remained hospitalized since October 19, following an incident outside her electorate office in Wangaratta located in Victoria's north-east.

Ms Haines sustained critical injuries after being struck and pinned between two vehicles while unloading the boot of her car following an event in Mansfield. Due to the severity of the trauma inflicted during the incident, medical teams performed double-leg amputations. She was subsequently transported by air to a Melbourne medical facility for specialized treatment.

The patient spent several weeks listed in a serious but stable condition after her medical team downgraded her status from critical on October 23. A hospital spokesperson confirmed the latest upgrade to stable status, noting that she continues to receive inpatient medical care. Representatives for the hospital stated that the family does not intend to issue further public statements.

A closer look

Previously, the parliamentarian's husband described his wife as a fighter and expressed hope for her gradual recovery over time. Floral tributes accumulated outside the Wangaratta electorate office in the days immediately following the event.

A 43-year-old man from Tarrawingee has been arrested and charged in connection with the incident. Police charges include dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and the federal offence of causing harm to a Commonwealth public official, alongside two unrelated drug offences. The accused has made a brief court appearance and remains remanded in custody without having formally entered any pleas.
