The brief

Alessia Russo netted a brace at Anfield to secure a 2-1 victory for Arsenal over Liverpool, moving the visitors up to sixth place in the league standings.

The story

Alessia Russo scored two goals to deliver a 2-1 victory for Arsenal against Liverpool at Anfield, lifting her team up to sixth place in the Women's Super League standings. The result provided relief for Arsenal head coach Renée Slegers following a challenging period that had yielded only one victory in the club's previous seven league matches. Russo's performance extended her recent scoring form to seven goals across her last four appearances.

Arsenal started the fixture strongly when Lisa Baum hit the crossbar with a deflected attempt. The visitors broke the deadlock after building an attack down the right flank, culminating in Emily Fox delivering a cross that Russo converted with a first-time finish. The advantage proved temporary, however, as Liverpool equalised six minutes later through Beata Olsson. Capitalising on space provided in the middle, Natalia Ramos played a direct ball forward that allowed Olsson to evade centre-backs Steph Catley and Leah Williamson before striking a shot into the bottom corner.

The match featured a contentious officiating decision when Liverpool sought a goal following an uncleared corner. Jenna Clark put the ball into the net at the far post, but the assistant referee disallowed the effort for offside against Vivien Endemann. Replays showed the delivery towards Endemann had inadvertently deflected off an Arsenal foot rather than a deliberate forward pass from the hosts, leaving Liverpool players and staff baffled.

A closer look

Arsenal responded before the interval when Russo restored the lead in the final minute of the first half. Baum provided the cross, and Russo directed a precise downward header past goalkeeper Khiara Keating. Slegers praised the forward after the match, describing her finishes as clean and noting her ability to find effective positions inside the penalty area.

The second half proved less eventful but maintained tension as Liverpool sought an equaliser. Cornila Kapocs missed a late opportunity in the 89th minute, volleying wide from an unmarked position in front of goal to the frustration of Liverpool head coach Gareth Taylor. Arsenal defended their lead through the closing stages to secure the three points.

Following the match, Liverpool defender Grace Fisk noted the positives from her side's performance despite extending their winless run in the league to five matches. Taylor agreed with the assessment, stating that he could not ask for more from the players regarding their overall performance. Slegers commended her squad's defensive resilience in the closing minutes as they preserved the victory ahead of an upcoming fixture against Barcelona.
