Russian strikes hit key power plant in Kyiv, Zelensky says
The full report
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky said a Russian ballistic missile struck a Kyiv power plant without advance warning from Western allies, killing at least two people and wounding around 20. The attack came days after US President Donald Trump announced an energy ceasefire between Moscow and Kyiv, raising questions over efforts to halt strikes on critical infrastructure.
A Russian ballistic missile struck a power plant in Kyiv on Tuesday evening without Ukraine receiving advance warning from its Western allies, President Volodymyr Zelensky said. Ukraine relies heavily on Western, particularly US, intelligence to detect incoming Russian attacks and help identify targets of its own.
Kyiv, which is home to some three million people, has come under increasing attack from Russian drones and missiles, with energy infrastructure a key target. "A Russian ballistic missile attack on Kyiv. Once again, no early warning from our partners," Zelensky wrote on Facebook.
At least two people were killed in the same attack, which also struck a residential building in the Desnianskyi district, said Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko. One of the residential buildings was hit in a strike the president said came with "no early warning from our partners".
The attack came two days after US President Donald Trump said an energy ceasefire had been agreed by Russia and Ukraine, although Kyiv reported multiple Russian strikes following the announcement. "Ukraine supported an energy ceasefire. Russia is targeting yet another power plant and the lives of our people," Zelensky said on social media following Tuesday's strikes.
It is the second night in a row Kyiv has been hit by Russian missiles. Following strikes on Monday night, there was speculation America had cut off access to key intelligence enabling Ukraine to track incoming threats. Earlier on Tuesday, Trump denied that was the case.
The main target was energy infrastructure, specifically the CHP-4. Unfortunately, it was hit. This is absolutely unjust: when they are destroying our infrastructure, and Ukraine is not even receiving early warnings about ballistic missile launches," he added.
