One dead and several injured after incident involving rollercoaster

An incident occurred on a rollercoaster at Six Flags Over Georgia, an amusement park in the state of Georgia, about 15 miles (24km) from Atlanta. The Cobb County Police Department is investigating the fatality.

According to the park's website, the Goliath rollercoaster, which was involved in the incident, opened in 2006. It has an elevation of 200ft (60m), a 170ft plunge, a 540-degree spiral, and a speed of up to 70mph (112km/h).

Witnesses told local media that they saw a man ejected from the ride, but this account has not been verified by the BBC. A park spokesperson stated that the team and local authorities responded immediately and are co-operating on an investigation into the incident.

The incident comes just weeks after one of Six Flags' parks in southern California announced it would close the popular X2 roller coaster due to alleged brain injuries from the ride. Six Flags said the ride had passed a range of safety tests, but decided to retire it because it was "the right thing to do".

Six Flags is the largest amusement park operator in North America, with 20 amusement parks, 14 water parks and nine resorts across Canada, the US and Mexico. The company has expressed its condolences to the guest's family, friends, and loved ones.
