The brief

Tesla will phase out its Cybertruck model at its Texas facility to increase manufacturing capacity for self-driving vehicles.

The story

Tesla plans to wind down production of its Cybertruck in mid-2027 at its factory in Texas, according to an announcement by Elon Musk. Sales of the futuristic model have fallen significantly below the annual target of 250,000 units that Mr Musk previously predicted. The decision represents a shift away from a project that entered the market when customer deliveries began in late 2023.

Mr Musk stated that ending production of the heavy, angular pickup truck will allow the automaker to increase manufacturing of the Cybercab. The robotic taxi forms a central part of the company's focus on autonomous vehicles, though the autonomous service has not yet established commercial success.

The Austin manufacturing facility is the only known plant equipped to produce the specialised components required for the Cybertruck, and it remains unclear whether manufacturing could relocate or cease entirely. Responding to a user on the social media platform X, Mr Musk described the vehicle as the "best vehicle Tesla has ever made" and characterized the production wind-down as the "end of an era".

A closer look

Market analysts note that Tesla's broader strategic pivot toward robotics and autonomy occurs as Chinese competitors increase their presence in the electric vehicle sector. The transition away from the Cybertruck marks a departure from a model initially promoted as a competitor to traditional pickup trucks.

The announcement coincided with a challenging period for Mr Musk, marked by substantial market capitalisation declines across his companies during the week and unsuccessful outcomes for candidates he supported in United States midterm elections.
