Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi has made league history by claiming consecutive scoring titles, despite a draw against Charlotte on the final day of the regular season.
The story
Lionel Messi has secured his status as the first player in Major League Soccer history to win back-to-back Golden Boot awards. The Argentinian forward topped the scoring charts with 26 goals during the regular season, successfully defending the top goal-scoring honour he achieved the previous year when he netted 29 goals.
The milestone was sealed despite Inter Miami finishing with a 3-3 draw against Charlotte at Nu Stadium on the final day of the regular season. Although Messi did not score in the fixture, he contributed by setting up the team's first two goals from corners in the opening half. His corner kicks led to a 14th-minute strike by Ian Fray and a 33rd-minute header by Luis Suarez. Rodrigo De Paul added a third goal before half-time to give Inter Miami a commanding lead.
Charlotte mounted a comeback in the second half, sparked by a brace from Liel Abada who scored early and again in the 55th minute. The visitors secured the draw in the 90th minute when Rodolfo Aloko reacted first to score the equaliser after a shot by Smalls ricocheted off the post. In stoppage time, a visibly frustrated Messi hit the post, while Aloko narrowly missed scoring a late winner for Charlotte.
A closer look
The result allowed Inter Miami to finish second in the Eastern Conference standings with 60 points, securing home-field advantage for the first two rounds of the MLS Cup playoffs. Third-place New England missed an opportunity to overtake them after suffering a 1-0 defeat against Orlando, finishing the season with 58 points.
Elsewhere in the Eastern Conference, Nashville concluded a dominant campaign by defeating Cincinnati 2-0 to finish as runaway overall leaders. Nashville established a new all-time Major League Soccer points record for a single season with 77 points, surpassing the previous record of 74 points set by Inter Miami in 2024. In the individual scoring race, Petar Musa of Dallas finished second behind Messi with 22 goals after failing to score in his side's 3-1 victory over Colorado.
