India news: CJP founder released after detention

The full report

Abhijeet Dipke, the founder of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), was released by an Indian court on Saturday, one day after his detention for attempting to lead a protest rally in New Delhi.

According to the CJP's head of legal affairs, Ratna Singh, Dipke was released after agreeing to certain conditions, but the details of the terms were not provided.

Dipke was detained on Friday while trying to make his way to Connaught Place to participate in the 'Lehra Do Tiranga' protest called by the CJP at Central Park.

The conditions of his bail are not yet clear, but according to LiveLaw, he has been asked to sign a peace bond requiring him to maintain peace and public tranquillity for a year, as stated under Section 126 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (BNSS).

Neha Bora, a prominent student activist and the face of the protests, was also detained on Friday while attempting to reach central Delhi with dozens of supporters. She was released earlier on Saturday.

The CJP's movement, also known as the 'Cockroach' movement, has been defying a security crackdown and rallying to demand the resignation of India's chief election commissioner.

Opposition parties and CJP activists accuse the election commission of manipulating voter rolls to benefit Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party.
