Oregon school shooting: Hero dad and teacher hailed as heroes after stopping gunman

The full report

A 36-year-old man, identified as Kaylub Giamanco, has been hailed as a hero after he intervened in a school shooting in Bend, Oregon, and shot the suspected 16-year-old gunman.

According to police, Giamanco was driving by the school when he saw the suspect throw his gun over a fence and then climb the fence onto school property. The suspect then fired at Giamanco's truck, hitting it at least three times.

Giamanco drove into the school parking lot and saw the suspect shoot the glass panes on two double doors to get inside. Once inside, the shooter went straight into the classroom and fired as many as 15 rounds.

Giamanco grabbed a .40-caliber pistol he legally kept in his car and went into the school through the same doors. He then shot the suspect multiple times after seeing him struggling with a teacher who had tackled the shooter.

The shooting resulted in the deaths of three children, ages 5, 8, and 11, and a 25-year-old teacher, Meghan Lambert. A 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher were transported to the hospital with critical and non-life-threatening injuries, respectively.

Police arrived at the school within minutes of the 911 call and found the suspect dead. The incident has left the community in shock, with many praising Giamanco's bravery and quick thinking in stopping the gunman.

Lambert's family released a statement praising Giamanco's actions and saying that he is a hero. They also expressed their gratitude to the other families affected by the shooting and offered their thoughts and prayers.
