Nithya Raman unseated incumbent Mayor Karen Bass, marking a significant victory for democratic socialists in urban American politics.
The story
Nithya Raman has defeated incumbent Karen Bass in the mayoral election for Los Angeles, concluding a close race for the leadership of the nation's second-largest city. Raman's victory follows elections that took place alongside US midterm races and adds to a series of electoral successes for candidates backed by the Democratic Socialists of America.
Born in India in 1981, Raman moved to the United States as a child and later earned a degree from Harvard University and a master's degree in urban planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She worked with slum dwellers' organisations in Delhi and founded Transparent Chennai, a nonprofit focused on urban data and sanitation, before moving to Los Angeles in 2013. She entered local politics in 2020 by winning a seat on the Los Angeles City Council.
A closer look
During her mayoral campaign, Raman centered her platform on housing, city services, and homelessness. Operating under the slogan "A City That Works," she pledged to repair infrastructure such as potholes and streetlights, cut red tape for housing developers, strengthen tenant protections, and reduce street homelessness by half before the 2028 Olympic Games. Her campaign attracted endorsements from various figures, including Senator Bernie Sanders and the Hollywood writers' guild.
Scroll.in reported that Raman's victory extends a wave of democratic socialist electoral gains nationally, with more than 50 DSA-backed candidates winning races across the United States. Yahoo News noted that with Raman's election, the two largest cities in the United States, alongside Washington, D.C., have now elected democratic socialist mayors.
