The full report
A proposal to create one of Victoria's first undercover, automated cattle feedlots has drawn community opposition in the state's south-east. The proposed feedlot, located at Llowalong, north of Maffra and Stratford, would house 2,206 cattle in enclosed sheds and feed them on a 90-day cycle before transporting them for processing.
Residents have expressed concerns about road safety and odour issues for neighbouring properties. Local resident Nick Lee, speaking on behalf of his neighbours, called for the application to be rejected at the Wellington Shire Council's October meeting. He cited increased traffic movements, noise levels, odour, and pollution as potential impacts on local residents and the environment.
The proposal has also raised concerns about the suitability of Llowalong Road for the volume of heavy traffic expected from the feedlot. Opponents of the feedlot presented a petition against the proposal, with almost 700 signatures, to the Wellington Shire Council at its October 6 meeting.
The Wellington Shire Council has referred the proposal to the general manager of development for further discussion at a future council meeting. A decision on the proposal may not be made until next year, according to the council.
