The brief

Following his defeat in the presidential election to incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Brazilian Senator Flávio Bolsonaro has travelled to the United States via Argentina, prompting criticism from Brazilian leadership and visa confirmation from Washington.

The story

Defeated Brazilian senator and presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro has travelled to the United States following his loss in Sunday's presidential election to leftwing incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Media reports and government confirmations tracked Bolsonaro's movement through South America after he disappeared for 24 hours following the election outcome.

Argentina's National Directorate of Migration confirmed on X that Bolsonaro, along with his wife and two daughters, crossed the border into Argentina using the Tancredo Neves International Bridge in the province of Misiones. According to Argentine migration authorities, the family entered with valid travel documentation and without legal impediments, subsequently boarding a private flight operated by Baires Fly S.A. bound for Ecuador.

Reports from news outlets including Metrópoles and Folha de S Paulo indicated that allies of the politician stated he was en route to Florida with plans to request political asylum, with an escape plan reportedly organized by a lawyer close to the Bolsonaro family. A United States State Department spokesperson confirmed that Bolsonaro and his family would be granted visas to allow their entry into the United States, while United States President Donald Trump stated he approved of the arrival.

A closer look

The departure followed an order from Brazil's Supreme Court requiring Bolsonaro to surrender his passport as part of an ongoing investigation into allegations of money laundering. After missing the 24-hour deadline set by the court to hand over his passport, lawmakers from President Lula's Workers' party asked the supreme court to order Bolsonaro's arrest and place his name on Interpol's Red Notice list.

President Lula publicly condemned the departure during an event in Brasília, describing the act as shameful and questioning the conscience of a citizen fleeing the country after an election loss. Meanwhile, reports of the senator's precise itinerary initially involved conflicting media accounts before Argentine authorities and international news organizations verified the transit details through South America toward Miami.
