The brief

Moesha Johnson extended her winning streak with victories in both the 10km and 3km elimination events at the World Cup opener in Cancún.

The story

Australian open water swimmer Moesha Johnson has commenced the 2026/27 campaign by capturing two gold medals at the World Cup opener in Cancún, Mexico. The 29-year-old athlete secured victories in both the 10km event and the 3km elimination race, continuing an undefeated run of form following her sweep of all open water events entered during the previous season.

During Friday's 10km race, Johnson claimed the $US1,000 sprint lap bonus before dropping back into the main group. Speaking to World Aquatics, Johnson explained that her endurance training had not yet reached peak levels for the new season, leading her to focus on tactical positioning within the pack.

After navigating the middle stages of the race within the main pack, Johnson advanced back to the front of the field. She completed the 10km course in a winning time of 2 hours, 3 minutes and 31 seconds, finishing 13 seconds ahead of Japan’s Airi Ebina and Italy’s Ginevra Taddeucci.

A closer look

Fellow Australian competitor and World Cup debutant Jacqueline Davison-McGovern, a 22-year-old swimmer representing St Peter's Western, finished the 10km race in seventh position. Johnson subsequently returned to the water to secure her second gold medal of the weekend in the 3km elimination race.

The Cancún event marked the opening leg of the current Open Water Swimming World Cup season. The competition circuit is scheduled to resume when the next leg takes place in Somabay, Egypt, on March 19 and 20, 2027.
