The full report
Helen Haines, the federal MP for Indi, has lost both legs due to injuries sustained in an alleged targeted attack near her electorate office in north-east Victoria.
According to The Guardian, Haines was struck by a car in Wangaratta on Monday afternoon and was initially in a critical but stable condition.
Surgeons were trying to save her right leg, but both legs had to be amputated due to the seriousness of her injuries.
Haines' husband, Phil Haines, provided an update on his wife's condition at Melbourne's Alfred hospital, stating that she is alive and stable, and that her heart and mind are in good shape.
Phil Haines described his wife as a fighter and a determined person who will do her best to recover with the support and love of her family.
A special appeal has been launched by Save the Children, and the charity's chief executive, Mat Tinkler, expressed gratitude for the Haines family's suggestion to direct donations towards the charity.
Tinkler stated that every dollar raised will make a huge amount of difference for children and families in the region who need support.
